REVIEW OF AUSTRALIAN ROAD RULES RELATING TO CHILD RESTRAINTS FOR PASSENGERS UNDER 16

ยท

The Federal Government has asked the NTC (National Transport Commission) to review the Australian Road Rules (ARR) relating to child restraints for passengers under 16, including children with medical conditions and disabilities.

The intention is to make the rules safer, more inclusive and aligned with the latest safety research and best practice guidelines, so every child is better protected on our roads.

These rules were last reviewed in 2010. Since that time, there have been significant changes to child restraint design and research into best practice use. The NTC is seeking input from relevant stakeholders to review the current ARR relating to child restraints. There will be a specific focus on the following areas:

  • Appropriate use of child restraints
  • Adult seatbelts and seating position
  • Improving the level of protection for children with medical conditions and disabilities
  • Additional items including taxis and rideshare
