Whether you are on holiday camping with the family, or lighting up a home fire pit, it is important to remember that preventable accidents can occur, especially when children are around.
Kidsafe Tasmania suggest following advice from the Tasmanian Parks & Wildlife Service.
- Where available, use established firepits
- Keep yourย campfireย at least 3ย metres away from overhanging branches and other flammable material
- Don’t light your campfire on peat soils or grassed sand dunes
- Don’t leave your fire unattended
- Make sure you extinguish your campfire with water
- Soak it. Stir it. Soak it again.
- Check your fire is cool to touch before you leave it
On total fire ban days, no fires are permitted.
The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) Burns Unit has teamed up with Kidsafe Tasmania and other partners to create an animated video focused on preventing fire pit burns, a significant cause of burn injuries across Tasmania. The animation aims to educate families on the risks associated with open fires outside including fire pits, bonfires and campfires and provide practical safety tips to reduce incidents, including the import burns first aid message, โCool for 20โ particularly as the summer holidays and camping season begins.
